Our History
Our History
Our Culture is Beautiful was inspired in 2017, when some of us learned from
students at Torrington High School that African American history was not
being taught at the school. Students signed a petition expressing their
interest in studying African American history, and a group got together to
present the petition to the Mayor. We asked the Mayor to express to the
Board of Education that more education is needed around cultural diversity.
We realized that the demographics of the Northwest Corner are such that
cultural diversity is not embraced and celebrated except for the European
cultures. Although there is a growing presence of African Americans, Asian
Americans, Latinx Americans and others, their cultures are not recognized
and celebrated. We wanted to let the larger community know that we are
here and decided to reach out to groups such as the police, government
agencies, media, faith-based organizations, etc.

We envision a vibrant community of people who are committed to preserving
and promoting the cultural, historical, intellectual and social movement
traditions of people of color and other minorities throughout the Northwest
Corner of Connecticut. We want to increase the awareness of racism and
unfair and discriminatory practices by individuals and institutions. We want
to promote fair treatment of all persons at all times. In this pandemic
moment, we want to demonstrate resilience, solidarity and persistence in
working toward our vision.

What's something exciting your business offers?
1. We train students to become leaders within their community.
2. We provide cultural diversity conversations using music with stories.
3. We offer free drumming sessions for students and adults every Thursday night at 6pm in Torrington.
4. Free summer activities from July to August 15th.
